Organic Chemistry: Overview

Organic chemistry talks a lot about organic molecules. Organic molecules as molecules containing carbon atoms. Carbon is the basic building block of organic compounds that recycles through the earth’s air, water, soil, and living organisms including human beings. A group of compounds that differ by only a CH2 group is called a homologous series (Organic Chemistry: Janice G. Smith, 3rd Ed. p117).
Carbon’s special properties
- On The Periodic Table Of Elements, carbon is found on group 4 (on the condensed 8 groups system).
- Carbon has 6 electrons. Two on the first inner shell and four on the outer shell (valency).
- Only the graphite type conducts electricity. Not coal, not diamond.
